When a motor starts directly at full voltage (DOL starting), it can draw 6-10 times its rated current, causing mechanical stress on equipment and voltage dips in the power supply. Soft starters mitigate this by gradually ramping up the voltage through thyristor control, limiting inrush current to typically 2-4 times the rated current.
